BOAD press club conference on climate finance in West Africa

Lomé, May 16, 2023. Club de la presse BOAD met online for a conference-debate on climate finance in West Africa. Public and private media from the Bank’s member countries took an active part in this meeting attended by some forty participants.

Alongside Mr Ibrahim TRAORE, expert in charge of Climate Finance at BOAD, were Mr Nassim OULMAN, Head of the Green Economy and Economy Section at the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and Ms Faten AGGAD, Senior Advisor, Climate Diplomacy and Geopolitics at the African Climate Foundation.

Economic challenges linked to climate change in Africa, and particularly in West Africa, the region’s potential in terms of the green and blue economies, the energy revolution and energy justice, and last but not least, the sub-regional development banks’ response to the need for financial resources, were among the topics discussed.

The BOAD, for its part, through its DJOLIBA Strategic Plan, for the period 2021-2025, has decided to devote 25% of its financial commitments, i.e. 825 billion FCFA, to Axis 3 relating to strengthening the resilience of populations to climate change. The plan also calls for the mobilization of 175 billion FCFA from the Climate Funds to finance projects to mitigate and adapt to climate change, in conjunction with the issue of biodiversity. These forecasts correspond to a portfolio of projects to be appraised for a total of 1,000 billion FCFA, over the implementation period of the Strategic Plan.

In addition to providing an opportunity to meet, share knowledge and debate, this activity is in keeping with the fundamentals of the BOAD press club, one of whose objectives is to put its members in touch with experts from partner institutions, in order to promote their documentation on key development and economic issues in West Africa.

The press club expressed its warm thanks to the three (03) experts who spent over two hours discussing various aspects of climate financing in the sub-region, and is looking forward to holding another meeting in the near future.
